The Mentalist: The Complete Third Season

Product Description

This season, Red John strikes into the heart of the CBI. Ever since the serial killer murdered Patrick Jane’s family, the California Bureau of Investigation consultant and former faux-psychic has become obsessed with finding the man who destroyed his life. But after a homicide suspect is set ablaze in his jail cell and a CBI agent is later framed as Red John, Patrick realizes his adversary is closer than he imagined. The 5-disc 24-Episode Season 3 of this hit procedural combines crime-solving twists with wry humor that celebrate mind over matter. In settings from gold country to the racetrack to a martial-arts cage brawl, unconventional Patrick uses his unique skills of observation and manipulation to buck the system. And crack the toughest cases.

Simon Baker's sly, sexy charm is a big reason The Mentalist is one of TV's most popular series. But Baker isn't the only appeal of this thoughtful, well-written, fast-paced crime drama. The Mentalist owes much more to Agatha Christie than to Law & Order or other contemporary police procedurals--because it focuses on Baker's character, Patrick Jane, using his brain and intuition to crack cases. Sure, there's the usual thorough police work done by Jane's California Bureau of Investigation team, led by the no-nonsense Agent Lisbon (the always appealing Robin Tunney). But Jane has gifts of observation that help profile, and capture, the bad guys preying on the good people around Sacramento. Jane is also pursuing his own specific demon: Red John, the evil serial killer who murdered Jane's family at the beginning of the series. It's a wonder that the folks in California aren't in a blind panic, given that this madman is still at large some three years later--but it's to The Mentalist's credit, and to its CBI in particular, that the story thread continues to be believable, and manageable from a crime-fighting perspective. The ensemble cast is stellar, including Tunney, who seems to be developing some deeper feelings for Jane. Other standouts include Tim Kang and Amanda Rhigetti, whose new romance with an FBI agent pummels the heart of her former flame, played by Owain Yeoman, and contains a potential landmine or two itself later in the season. But it's Baker's light, deft portrayal of a tortured genius who manages to keep a wry sense of humor that makes The Mentalist so compelling episode after episode. As always, the location shooting around Northern California is breathtaking.

This boxed set includes a great documentary with interviews of professors and former law-enforcement officials at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York, talking about how real serial-killer profiling is done--and applying it to the fictional Red John. And this season also features an episode directed by Simon Baker, with a commentary from him that is particularly crisp and entertaining. Crime-show fans will love The Mentalist, and so will those intrigued by the always-baffling puzzles of human behavior. --A.T. Hurley

As said before, with umpty-ump crime shows pasted all over the television screens and new ones promised of the next season it is gratifying to see that one of those crime shows maintains its integrity and appreciates its audience the way THE MENTALIST does. The writing is consistently good, the crimes investigated require thought in figuring out the perpetrator, but what really makes the series work is the presence of the main character - the almost nonchalant mindreader Patrick Jane. Part of this is due to the inventiveness of the creator of the series, part of it is due to the script du jour, but the whole thing couldn't work as well without the subtle acting skills of Simon Baker. Baker knows who to keep the twinkle in his eye, even in the most potentially dangerous moments. He never pushes his skills to make the character look like a seer, but instead inserts his penetrating opinions in a way that makes the whole teams of investigators work well together. He is ably supported by... Read more

Simon Baker returns for a superb third season as Patrick Jane, former psychic and current consultant to the California Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Jane applies his keen powers of observation and psychological manipulation as part of the investigative team led by senior agent Theresa Lisbon (Robin Tunney), whose patience with Jane's often mischevious antics barely masks an growing personal interest.

"The Mentalist" continues to present interesting cases for the team to solve, while highlighting their interpersonal dynamics and CBI politics. Agent Lisbon will suffer through two new bosses, each with his or her own agenda and multi-episode narrative. Lisbon will even be sidelined for one case, pushing the deadpan Cho (Tim Kang) into a not entirely welcome leadership role. Grace Van Pelt (Amanda Rhigetti) takes up with a handsome and smooth talking FBI agent, much to the anguish of former boyfriend agent Rigsby (Owain Yeoman), but Van Pelt's new love may not be the man... We had the cable for the TV disconnected about five years ago. A friend told us about The Mentalist DVD's and we are very pleased with the shows. Our family enjoys watching them more than once, and when purchasing the whole season, (or a couple/few seasons!) it's nice to watch over and over. We definitely "got our money's worth"...
Quality is very good- stories are fun, detective mystery, etc. Love the cast of this show...and we can't wait for the next season!

    Product Description

California Bureau of Investigation consultant Patrick Jane (Simon Baker in his Emmy®-nominated role) has a blatant lack of protocol but is self-assured and driven. The former “psychic” uses his talent for seeing the clues everyone else misses to solve the most baffling crimes. But there’s more than crime that makes this season a must-see: Lisbon and Cho reveal hints about their troubled pasts. Violence fells one CBI boss, and the new boss seems more interested in authority than teamwork. And as the Van Pelt-Rigsby relationship heats up, it threatens to cool down their careers. Match wits with the hit series that balances nimble humor with dark thrills.

The Mentalist is one of the most captivating TV police procedurals ever made. Part of The Mentalist's appeal is due to Simon Baker's easy, amazing performance as the California Bureau of Investigation's staff psychic. Part of it is in the snappy writing and the plots that are a cut above the average network cop show. And part of it is The Mentalist's splurging on shooting on location, all over California. It elevates the state to a costarring role, and enriches the plots and gives them depth and context. At the beginning of season 2, the plot thickens. Baker's character, Patrick Jane, and his boss, Agent Lisbon (the compelling Robin Tunney), are taken off the high-profile "Red John" case, because they are deemed "too close to it." That's actually true, as Jane joined the CBI solely to help catch the murderous Red John, who killed Jane's wife and child. Now that Jane and Lisbon are off the case, they focus, or seem to focus, on regular kidnappings, murders, and the like--while still trying to follow leads in the vexing Red John case without supervisors finding out. The Mentalist is an especially satisfying American TV series because it truly builds, episode to episode, but a viewer also can completely enjoy a single episode here and there without necessarily committing to the whole series.

But why would any viewer want to do that? Baker makes Jane a quietly effective crime solver, someone underestimated by fellow law enforcement officials as a "party trick" or fraud. But Jane's powers of perception--a steely focus that has nothing to do with magic, but everything to do with being completely in the moment--are such that most police agencies would be thrilled to have him on their staff. There's a nice line of sub-rosa chemistry, too, between Jane and Lisbon--believable because the two characters have camaraderie as well as a veneer of professionalism. The rich boxed set comes with great extras, including an interview with an actual mentalist, Luke Jermay, who is a consultant on the show, and who demonstrates his techniques of observation and deduction. There is also a great commentary by executive producer Chris Long with Jermay, pointing out all the subliminal clues in the first episode of the season. There are also several deleted scenes. Fans of police dramas and of any well-crafted and splendidly acted TV series won't want to miss The Mentalist --A.T. Hurley

5.0 out of 5 stars Must see TV, April 24, 2010
This review is from: The Mentalist: The Complete Second Season (DVD)
The Mentalist is back and better than ever with 22 new episodes of innovative and manipulative crime-solving techniques. Season two starts off with a bang and keeps on delivering. There are lots twist and turns as Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) manipulates everyone and everything around him to uncover the truth behind the murders.

The story lines are better than ever and manage to develop the background, personalities, and lives of the main characters. We get insight into the childhood issues that drive both Jane and Cho. We get pulled in deeper as we watch the relationships between the characters grow and develop. The chemistry between Jane and Lisbon (Robin Tunney) continues to grow and the energy between them is electric.

This is the one show on TV where there is so much misdirection and redirection that guessing the ending isn't probable, even when all the info is sitting right in front of you.

If you're looking for excellent... Read more

This review is from: The Mentalist: The Complete Second Season (DVD)
This has got to be my all time favorite tv show, ever. The combination of characters put together for this series was nothing short of inspired. Although there is the requisite "beautiful people", there are at least not completely perfect little models in their ratings boosting bustiers.
The individualities, the quirky personalities and flaws are delightful and endearing. The brilliance and pathos of the lead, the 'mentalist' himself is wonderful and makes each show a treat to watch. Trying to figure out the clues and characters throughout and before the end is like an Agatha Christie short every week. It's great!

    I'd give it a 6 if I cculd.

Patrick Jane's unpredictability, his character and how he interacts with the team makes this, hands down, the most entertaining show on the tube.

Who cares if it is unrealistic? All of these shows are.

You want realistic watch the news.

You want entertainment The Mentalist cannot be topped.
